Detailed Itinerary Overview

Day 1: Arrival in Baghdad

Welcome to Iraq. Upon arriving at Baghdad International Airport, you will be met by your local guide and transferred to your hotel.

The remainder of the day is at leisure, allowing you to settle in, recover from your flight, and prepare for the journey through Iraq’s remarkable history and culture.

Day 2: Discover Baghdad & Ctesiphon

After breakfast, begin exploring Baghdad, a city where centuries of history blend with vibrant modern life.

Our first stop is Liberation Square, one of the capital’s best-known landmarks and a symbol of Iraq’s recent history. The square has played an important role in many of the country’s defining moments and offers insight into modern Baghdad.

From there, enjoy a relaxing boat ride across the Tigris River, the historic waterway that has shaped the city since its foundation. The crossing provides excellent views of Baghdad from the river before reaching the old quarter.

Continue to Al-Mutanabbi Street, Baghdad’s famous literary district. Lined with bookstores, cafés, and historic buildings, it has long been a gathering place for writers, scholars, and book lovers.

Nearby, visit the historic Abbasid Palace, an impressive reminder of Baghdad’s golden age, before strolling through the bustling Old Bazaar and the traditional Copper Market, where craftsmen continue centuries-old metalworking traditions.

Pause for refreshments at the legendary Al-Shabander Café, one of Baghdad’s oldest tea houses, where you’ll enjoy authentic Iraqi tea in an atmosphere filled with local history and character.

In the afternoon, travel to Ctesiphon, once the capital of the Sasanian Empire. Its monumental brick arch, known as Taq Kasra, remains one of the largest surviving single-span brick vaults ever constructed and stands as one of Iraq’s greatest archaeological landmarks.

The day concludes in Al-Kadhimiya, one of Baghdad’s most important religious districts. Wander through its lively streets before visiting the magnificent Al-Kadhimiya Shrine, crowned with its distinctive golden dome and housing the tombs of Imam Musa al-Kadhim and Imam Muhammad al-Jawad.

Day 3: Baghdad – Babylon – Karbala

Following breakfast, depart Baghdad and begin the journey toward central Iraq.

Along the route, pass the Martyr Monument (subject to opening and maintenance conditions), one of Baghdad’s most recognizable modern landmarks dedicated to those who lost their lives in Iraq’s conflicts.

Continue to the ancient city of Babylon, one of the world’s most celebrated archaeological sites and the former capital of King Nebuchadnezzar II. For centuries, Babylon stood as a center of power, learning, and innovation, and is famously associated with the legendary Hanging Gardens.

Explore the archaeological remains, including reconstructed sections of the ancient city, monumental walls, ceremonial gateways, and other remarkable traces of Mesopotamian civilization.

Overlooking the ruins is the former Saddam Palace, now serving as a museum and viewpoint offering panoramic views across the historic landscape.

Later, continue to Karbala, one of Islam’s holiest cities. After checking into your hotel, visit the city’s two revered shrines.

Begin at the Imam Abbas Shrine, honoring Al-Abbas ibn Ali, admired for his courage and unwavering loyalty during the Battle of Karbala.

Continue to the nearby Imam Hussein Shrine, built over the resting place of Imam Hussein, whose sacrifice remains one of the defining events in Islamic history.

As evening falls, experience the unique atmosphere created by thousands of pilgrims visiting the shrines.

Day 4: Najaf, Uruk & Ur

After breakfast, leave Karbala and travel deeper into southern Iraq, following the path through the cradle of civilization.

Arrive in Najaf for a panoramic stop overlooking Wadi-us-Salaam, the world’s largest cemetery. Stretching across a vast area with millions of graves, it is one of the most significant religious burial sites in the Islamic world.

Continue south to the archaeological site of Uruk, regarded as one of humanity’s earliest cities. This ancient settlement played a crucial role in the development of urban life, writing, and organized society during the Sumerian period.

The journey then continues to Nasiriyah, where you’ll visit the magnificent Ziggurat of Ur. Built more than four thousand years ago, this monumental stepped temple remains one of the finest surviving examples of Mesopotamian architecture and reflects the engineering achievements of ancient Sumer.

After exploring the site, transfer to your hotel.

Day 5: Mesopotamian Marshes & Return to Baghdad

After breakfast, check out and travel to the extraordinary Mesopotamian Marshes, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape and one of Iraq’s most distinctive natural environments.

The marshes are home to the Marsh Arab communities, whose traditions and lifestyle have remained closely connected to the waterways for generations.

Board a traditional shakhtura boat and cruise through the peaceful reed-lined channels while learning about the culture and daily life of the local inhabitants.

Visit a traditional mudhif (reed guesthouse), where you’ll be welcomed with Iraqi hospitality and gain insight into customs that have endured for thousands of years.

Enjoy a traditional lunch featuring Masgouf, Iraq’s signature grilled fish prepared over an open fire using time-honored techniques.

In the afternoon, return to Baghdad for your final evening in Iraq.
